MISSION 1000: Sponsor Nutrition and health supplements for expecting women

Acute poverty is impacting safe motherhood of families reliant on daily wage-earning, which is now impacted due to lockdown. Food supplies ensured by Govt. does not secure nutrition and hygiene requirement of pregnant women in extreme poverty.

More than 90% of expectant mothers in rural areas are unaware of health and nutrition issues, according to the Jharkhand Economic Survey 2015-16. The state has one of the country’s worst maternal mortality rates. In Jharkhand, for every 100,000 live births 208 mothers die during delivery, compared to the national rate of 178, while the under-five mortality rate among children is at a high 51 per thousand live births, according to the state health department. Due to a lack of awareness and poverty, pregnant women in rural areas mostly consume rice with salt or sometimes potatoes. Rice-dal and some vegetables is a luxurious meal for them only consumed if they are lucky enough to afford it. The result is more than 40% of pregnant women are unhealthy and anaemic.
